NES coffee table FINAL POST!! RAH!!!!

I've finally finished my giant NES controller/ coffee table/ storage box! Awesome!
The piece of glass that I had ordered arrived today, it looks super fresh.
Here are the photos of the final thing, with the glass on top:

You can see I got some tall clear rubber stoppers, which I stuck on the glass, so it doesn't damage the controller when it's sitting on top, and so it clears the height of the buttons:

And again, here are the pictures of what it looks like finished, without the glass.

And also again, here's how it opens up, to reveal the storage space inside, which I have already filled.

Look at the fun-vibes just radiating from Emily's face!:

Some people have asked for the blueprints I used to make it, so they can have a go at making one themselves (yay! I have inspired!).
I didn't really use "blueprints" for this, I basically just stuck my NES controller in a scanner and scanned it. I then printed it off so it filled an A4 page, and used that image to measure how far apart everything on the controller is.
The second half of these blueprints where are just a list of the pieces I needed to cut so I didn't forget.

One thing to remember if you try this, write a list of all possible tools that you might need.
The hardest tool to find for me was a 90mm Hole saw that I needed to cut the A and B buttons.
Take note that I have literally zero woodwork experience (my school never even had woodwork classes), besides the asteroids cabinet I made. However I did get a lot of advice from my dad and uncle about how I should do stuff (ie. like chiselling out the surface so the hinges sit flush etc.)

If you've just arrived at this post, here are all the previous posts I have posted with all the progress shots as I was making it:

NES coffee table
NES coffee table update 1: Bevelling the edges.
NES coffee table update 2: Making the buttons.
NES coffee table update 3: Making the D-pad.
NES coffee table update 4: Mounting the buttons.
NES coffee table update 5: Painting.
NES coffee table update 6: Wiring and final construction.

Here it is in action! zomg!:

  25. Did you consider putting the NES inside the box with a mail-flap style cart slot? Cause that's the only thing I'd do to change it. Awesome.

Time for me to get to work on a SNES controller table! The shoulder buttons should be fun on Mario Kart. LUNNNNGGGGE POWER SLIDE

Maybe they could even use their feet if their hands were worse off.
    Just an idea.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I was wondering how much the project cost in the end? Cost of materials, how many hours it took from concept through completion...how much the custom glass piece cost :o This looks like an awesome summer project, but I just bought a house so I'm trying to budget on everything else :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Ok, not to sound cliche, but.....AWESOME! The only thing i noticed is that the start/select wording looks a little off center up and down. It seems a little high. Otherwise, props...major props.

    ReplyDelete
  110. that's so awesome! I want one haha

You should do something to cover up the wires inside, though. So they wouldn't get caught and so it'd look more finished. great GREAT piece!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hey Kyle,
Love your work, gf and I are totally blown away by your table. We're in the process of reworking our lounge room, with a big red 6 seater couch, 46" LCD TV connected to every Nintendo console, 360 and PS2.
I know you're busy on your next project, but if you're keen to make some money (with uni holidays coming up), we're willing to make a VERY generous offer on commissioning a table from you. Unfortunately I lack the workspace and construction skills to build one myself, but can assist with supplying stanley knives, paint and other materials. I'll soon have some original wireless IR controllers (the old Acclaim ones) which you're more than welcome to use in your own table. Better yet, we're just a suburb away from you in Flemington.
We are dead set serious and can pay you half now and half when the job is done - plenty of profit to go towards your new shelves.

  124. That's really really cool. I just have one suggestion. You should try and build a wireless transmitter and receiver for it, so it doesn't have that funky cord sticking out of it. They aren't hard to make, and you seem to have some electronics skills under your belt already. Just a suggestion, awesome work.

    ReplyDelete
  127. If you have some nasty empty spaces in your home that you just do not know what to do with. You try to fill them up with plants or large pieces of wall art but no help. Then there is a simple solution to your problem and that is a lovely console table.Console tables have been used over the years and are not just restricted for being placed at the end of a hallway. There is one more option that we just get an end table or an accent table that can help. But console tables are somewhat larger than accent tables or end tables. Thus they will offer a lot more storage space and help you provide a clean and organized look to your home.

    ReplyDelete

  171. aight. i know i should've come by this earlier but i'm a bit slow... sometimes. this is simply awesome. i intend to make one myself within ten years or so. or maybe one for xbox 360. some might say it's a bad shape. but hey, i like that round shape and it's more stylish, as a coffee table ;) although, whichever console i choose (or maybe a keyboard), i think i'll skip the electronic parts so it won't in any case be as awesome as yours. *sob sob*. /animatem
