I've finally finished my giant NES controller/ coffee table/ storage box! Awesome!
The piece of glass that I had ordered arrived today, it looks super fresh.
Here are the photos of the final thing, with the glass on top:
You can see I got some tall clear rubber stoppers, which I stuck on the glass, so it doesn't damage the controller when it's sitting on top, and so it clears the height of the buttons:
And again, here are the pictures of what it looks like finished, without the glass.
And also again, here's how it opens up, to reveal the storage space inside, which I have already filled.
Look at the fun-vibes just radiating from Emily's face!:
Some people have asked for the blueprints I used to make it, so they can have a go at making one themselves (yay! I have inspired!).
I didn't really use "blueprints" for this, I basically just stuck my NES controller in a scanner and scanned it. I then printed it off so it filled an A4 page, and used that image to measure how far apart everything on the controller is.
The second half of these blueprints where are just a list of the pieces I needed to cut so I didn't forget.
One thing to remember if you try this, write a list of all possible tools that you might need.
The hardest tool to find for me was a 90mm Hole saw that I needed to cut the A and B buttons.
Take note that I have literally zero woodwork experience (my school never even had woodwork classes), besides the asteroids cabinet I made. However I did get a lot of advice from my dad and uncle about how I should do stuff (ie. like chiselling out the surface so the hinges sit flush etc.)
If you've just arrived at this post, here are all the previous posts I have posted with all the progress shots as I was making it:
NES coffee table
NES coffee table update 1: Bevelling the edges.
NES coffee table update 2: Making the buttons.
NES coffee table update 3: Making the D-pad.
NES coffee table update 4: Mounting the buttons.
NES coffee table update 5: Painting.
NES coffee table update 6: Wiring and final construction.
Here it is in action! zomg!:

We get plenty of traffic and I've asked people to come here and tell you how good it is.
I'd be honoured if you came and posted a comment of your own. Also I do have one question - is it wireless?

BEST. COFFEE TABLE. EVER!!!
Confirmed! You sir, have mad coffee-tabling skillz!
HOW MUCH? I WANT ONE.
Forget the table... Very hot girl. worth watching her playing the nes.
That is so effin sweet! You should sell these! I would purchase one. Please post if you decide to do this! What a fantastic idea!
That is very creative. And you might have something brewing man. If I were you, I would show this to Nintendo or some furniture company and get this trend going. Make money off of your invention man.
That is some filthy shit! I want one too! Now I'll have to come back to your ultra awesome blog to see what you make next (like a giant old skool nintendo entertainment center to go with your controller).
Wow -- even if this was just a table, it would have already been amazing. Mad props!
This is awesome! Mind if I borrow the idea for a kick-ass table?
ur a fucked up loser why do u waste ur time with that faggotry
go out and get a girlfreid u fuckin loser.
So so cool. I would have liked it even if it didnt work.
Totally awesome. The best piece of gaming furniture ever. Fact.
Serious respect.
Great work, very cool piece of kit that would probably set you back a pretty penny, and that table aint half bad either ! ;)
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
i was looking for an idea for a DIY gift when i stumbled on your awesome table.
I don`t want to copy your idea, so i was wondering if you had any awesome suggestions:)
Did you consider putting the NES inside the box with a mail-flap style cart slot? Cause that's the only thing I'd do to change it. Awesome.
Time for me to get to work on a SNES controller table! The shoulder buttons should be fun on Mario Kart. LUNNNNGGGGE POWER SLIDE
That is brilliant. I'm not a gamer but that is freaking awesome.
That could potentially be good for disabled children/adults who can't negotiate small controllers/buttons.
Maybe they could even use their feet if their hands were worse off.
Just an idea.
oh yeah and i forgot to ask. I was to build a bookcase with an awesome theme (space invaders, pacman, mario, rayman, whichever)but don`t really know where to start. Any ideas?
thanks
Brilliant! Bravo.
That is badical. Great job :)
I'm sure you've gotten comments like this, but having it wireless would be awesome!
One such wireless mod:

im gonna make an n64 controller yeah!!
Retro or Modern table? ;) Great Job!
Pretty cool stuff.
It must way a ton, especially with all the games in it.
Does it have any wheels in the bottom? Didn't see anything in the plans.
That is the coolest thing I have ever seen!!!!! Makes me want to make all kinds of geeky stuff for my place! Awesome job!!! I look forward to seeing new things from you in the future!
hahaha so awesome, nice work!
I'd make one myself but my NES just gives a blank screen.
I can't even begin to tell you how much I want one of those! If I had the skills and space I'd try it for sure! You rock!
why are you so cool. =)
When do you start mass production? :)
nice work men...really a masterpiece, maybe i wanna try on ps2 joystick :-P
awesomest ever!!! thanks for sharing!! -an 80's kid
very awesome!
That is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life!
(And the girl is beautiful too, but that's rather beside the point :)
CHEERS!!
Wow, I want to play with it.
Wow. Amazing work there. The one thing that I wish you would do is, you said there were no blueprints?
You could not just measure the table as it, and make some for the rest of us.
But then again, that would only be if you are the coolest guy on earth. 8D
Holy shit. Ultra Awesome is correct.
mad respect!
Nice Job!
thats awesome! great work!
How much?
WHOA! ...and you have minimal woodshop experience? that's hard to believe. amazing job. that's my summer project this year! =D can you tell us approximately how much you spent on the entire project?

One of the coolest things I have ever seen.
super wicked man. i'm really impressed that you actually followed through on the idea. most people i know would say "wouldn't that be cool to do" while smoking something and then never think about it again!
Very awesome.
ncie job!!!
That is so cool!
I have looked upon your endeavor and seen that it is good. You shall be counted amongst the saved when my rule comes.
A work of art! Awesome!
Incredible, very awesome, and the girl is super cute too. Anyone who says this is a waste of time is an idiot, this is brilliant, and you should make some serious money off of this. And anyone telling you to go out and get a girlfriend is also an idiot, because you have a cute one right there.
You'er one talented SOB....aren't cha..... =D

I don't know how he can be gay when he has a totally hot girl doing his bidding.
"Jump! I said jump!"
LOL! No, you're not gay, the girl in the video proves it!
The fact that you have wired it so that one can actually use the coffee table as an actual Nintendo controller is pure genius!
Way to go, Mod'er!

Ха ха ха ха ха!

-Revenger681
Damn that's awesome!! I want one.
Great Fun!!!!!!
whaou...fucking AMAZING! if you decide to sell it say it!
Very cool. I think it would be awesome to mount the console inside of the coffee table somehow.
You are obviously the coolest person ever. Rock on!
That girl is hot. Take it off!
dude! cool idea... but at least clean your room it a tip! lol ^_^
How about a SNES controller?
I wish I could think of a word to describe your blog. Overwhelming, grand, breathtaking, splendid, tremendous, remarkable, amazing, awe-inspiring, astounding, humbling... No, that's just not it. Your blog is............fantastic!
dude what thicknes of mdf did you use for the main box construction?
I used 18mm MDF for the main construction, and 4mm MDF for the raised surface bits.
Check my other posts I'm sure I mentioned it in them.
too bad you don't have electrical experience to wire that bad boy up and make it functional...that would be amazing
I WANT IT. I WANT TO PLAY WITH IT.
the girlfriend that is
That is the coolest EVER!
I just want to make my Mario jump and eat mushrooms with it.
You should think about selling these for all of us fans who have no woodwork skills. Or electrical skills. I'd pay for it.
I was wondering how much the project cost in the end? Cost of materials, how many hours it took from concept through completion...how much the custom glass piece cost :o This looks like an awesome summer project, but I just bought a house so I'm trying to budget on everything else :)
Damnit, this is so cool.
thinking about a powerglove sleeping bag?
ok that's a terrible joke. and idea. :(
hot + smart. and u play video gamez. kewl.
u r a mad genius! MAD! That is probably one of the coolest pieces of art/furniture on the face of the planet.
One word: AWESOME! : D
Great work, dude. I would be super happy if you would pass me the measurements on the whole thing, if it's not much of a problem :)
retrosondre [a] hotmail [dot] com
That is possible the coolest thing I have ever seen. The design is so timeless and will never be mistaken for something else. Great work!! and if you have a spare one please send it to sweden, it would be great in my livingroom ;)
Ok, not to sound cliche, but.....AWESOME! The only thing i noticed is that the start/select wording looks a little off center up and down. It seems a little high. Otherwise, props...major props.
dude... that's one of the coolest things i've ever seen in my life. you could make oodles of money off of this! i wish i had the skills to do that i totally want one :) snaps for you!
It's awesome...beyond belief.
that's so awesome! I want one haha
You should do something to cover up the wires inside, though. So they wouldn't get caught and so it'd look more finished. great GREAT piece!
Hey Kyle,
Love your work, gf and I are totally blown away by your table. We're in the process of reworking our lounge room, with a big red 6 seater couch, 46" LCD TV connected to every Nintendo console, 360 and PS2.
I know you're busy on your next project, but if you're keen to make some money (with uni holidays coming up), we're willing to make a VERY generous offer on commissioning a table from you. Unfortunately I lack the workspace and construction skills to build one myself, but can assist with supplying stanley knives, paint and other materials. I'll soon have some original wireless IR controllers (the old Acclaim ones) which you're more than welcome to use in your own table. Better yet, we're just a suburb away from you in Flemington.
We are dead set serious and can pay you half now and half when the job is done - plenty of profit to go towards your new shelves.
syko64 [at] hotmail [dot]com
you are immensely talented. i mean, INCREDIBLY. you should start a business, i would love to get my hands on some of things you've made. GENIUS.
Ah Ah! I love it!
AWESOME!
That... is.... amazing....
I envy you.
-Robbie
This is unbelievable! And incredibly awesome. If you're ever interested in making another one to sell, please let me know.

Great work!
I've posted about it at my spanish blog.

hey kyel d. can u plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz email me a wiring plan of the giant controller plz! that would help me sooooooooooooooooo much ty
splintercellbob@hotmail.com
You've inspired me to make a coffee table also :-). Check out my blog if you want to see my gameboy color coffee table.
let's get married!
That's really really cool. I just have one suggestion. You should try and build a wireless transmitter and receiver for it, so it doesn't have that funky cord sticking out of it. They aren't hard to make, and you seem to have some electronics skills under your belt already. Just a suggestion, awesome work.
BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL!!
You're the best ;)
Do you make the nintendo coffee tables to sell? caus ei am interested
If you have some nasty empty spaces in your home that you just do not know what to do with. You try to fill them up with plants or large pieces of wall art but no help. Then there is a simple solution to your problem and that is a lovely console table.Console tables have been used over the years and are not just restricted for being placed at the end of a hallway. There is one more option that we just get an end table or an accent table that can help. But console tables are somewhat larger than accent tables or end tables. Thus they will offer a lot more storage space and help you provide a clean and organized look to your home.
Yep I want one too
u might be onto something here mate......
How much.,.... cmon.....
Pretty much the best thing I've ever seen. ever. You should go into business.
You could probably make a bit of cash on ebay with those. Very nice work.
great stuff, did you ever think about selling it to the old generation - is much fun for old people homes
You're my hero dude !
my grandson asked me to help him with this project. I am a kit builder, have no trouble soldering and adapting connectors. But I am having trouble doping out the wiring from the TC4021BP chip to the plug, to the activators. You could save me a lot of time if you have created a wiring or logic diagram. Thank you. Joe
k2kyq@arrl.net
Again, phenomenal. A diagram for the wiring seems to be the Number 1 request. (hint-hint)
I'm building one now... thanks for the ide.
Can you put coffee on it?
Awsome job lad!
Big Greets from sweden.
Keep up the good work.
/k
My geek senses are tingling :D
Wow, that's just truly amazing!
Hope to see more of you in the future ;)
cheerio
Brilliant - absolutely brilliant!
2 words. Holy BEEEEEPPPP! Hey, don't harass me, I'm only 10.
What do you mean?
Do you have a diagram for the wiring?
looks crappy. Funny to see how much money some people have to spend at useless dumb stuff like that. by the way gp2x rocks and pandora sucks
that is for dumbs yep
congratulations all
sux azz
I LOVE it! ThinkGeek or SharperImage or somebody should pay you a bunch of money for this design so they can build them and we can buy them! Super!hr
VERY cool! I want one, too!
Kyle, if you would ever consider building another on commission, I'd love to talk to you about it. dcegelisatyahoodotcom. Thanks man, great work!
I could not visit your blog and not leave a comment, that is just so cool. I want one so bad!! I am with everyone else, if you make any more I would love to buy one. You are my hero!! I can not wait to tell everyone I know about this!
Good Job! :)
Amazing creation!!! This thing is worth millions if you ask me. Actually, it's priceless! I want one so bad. My original NES still sits proudly between the XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii. Seeing this is extremely inspiring! Thanks, and once again, incredible!
How much does it weigh?
OMG...pardon my language...but that is fucking amazing!!! If you work with a company to produce that, you'll be rich.

Man, this is awesome. If I ever have the time I have to try making this!
great!!!! where can a get it? lol
aight. i know i should've come by this earlier but i'm a bit slow... sometimes. this is simply awesome. i intend to make one myself within ten years or so. or maybe one for xbox 360. some might say it's a bad shape. but hey, i like that round shape and it's more stylish, as a coffee table ;) although, whichever console i choose (or maybe a keyboard), i think i'll skip the electronic parts so it won't in any case be as awesome as yours. *sob sob*. /animatem
super great! Wow..
I'm working away at my own Nes coffee table but I'm having some serious trouble with the wiring, I don't understand how you went from a 7 pin to a 9 pin? Have you any other info on the wiring it's hard to see it properly from the images! It's a surprise birthday present for someone so any help would be amazing! spacegirl3001@hotmail.com is my e-mail please help!
